NEW GENERATION #JAZZLAB 2022

presented by Jaguar

In a time of crises it's easy to just rely on old and reliable things. Yet innovation must always find its way. Therefore we are proud to announce that our promotional award will be back in 2022 together with our Presenting Partner Jaguar.

For many young artists entering the music business is riddled with obstacles. Besides talent and luck, it needs an enormous amount of energy, perseverance, persistence, and time, to get the proverbial foot in the door. The New Generation #JazzLab wants to make this step a bit easier.

Jury-selected acts will be invited to this year's Festival da Jazz. They get to play, they win a substantiell cash prize and last but not least, they get to work with our illustrious round of mentors.

THE WINNERS

INSPACE

InSpace is an ensemble of five young musicians from Ukraine, Russia and Germany. The compositions of their singer Kateryna Kravchenko are supported by an acoustic and warm band sound, which exhausts the timbre of each individual instrument and gives the music a depth which is rich in contrast. The melody assumes the leading role. Not subject to any pulse, it is organically embedded in complex rhythmic structures. It intertwines with the accompaniment to form a continuous unity. The synergies arising from the different backgrounds of the musicians help to create innovative sound experiences and let the pieces appear in an ever new light.

YOTAM BEN-OR QUARTET

Harmonica player and composer Yotam Ben-Or was born and raised in Nataf, a small village in the Jerusalem area. He started playing the harmonica at the age of 11, taught by his uncle. He moved to New York in 2014 after receiving a full scholarship to study at the New School. Since moving to NYC, Ben-Or and his group have performed at the most prestigious venues and festivals in town such as: Jazz at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. They toured Europe, the Americas and Israel. He has worked and studied with musicians such as Avishai Cohen (bass) and Gregoire Maret (harmonica). “Playing at a level that matches Stevie Wonder himself" (Bass Musician Magazine).

THE MENTORS 2022

At the centre of the New Generation #JazzLab is the collaboration of the winning acts with various jazz greats. These «mentors» are renowned professionals who support the young talents in many ways. The Festival da Jazz deliberately chooses artists who distinguish themselves by their multifaceted work and curiosity.

OMAR SOSA

Cuban virtuoso Omar Sosa found his way to music via percussion and is now a Grammy-winning pianist and composer. He plays solo, in a trio, in a big band and with symphony orchestras. With a foundation in Latin Jazz, Sosa has always broadened his horizons and looks forward to once again sharing his spirit with the next generation.

YILIAN CAÑIZARES

Yilian Cañizares is one of the most fascinating violinists, singers and composers of our time. Always committed to her origins, she skilfully combines jazz, classical music and Afro-Cuban rhythms with her unique voice, combined with an enchanting smile.

LARS DANIELSSON

Danielsson worked/worked with greats like Nils Landgren, Charles Lloyd, Kenny Wheeler, the Brecker Brothers and John Scofield. He is an extremely creative composer. His special skills include his technical brilliance, his outstanding musical imagination and his almost telepathic understanding of other musicians.
